Hokey Pokey

Hello today we are making hokey pokey.

Aim: To make hokey pokey using sugar, golden syrup and baking soda.

When the sugar and golden syrup combine with the baking soda it froths and makes carbon dioxide gas. That is why the hokey pokey has bubbles.

Materials:
  1. 2 tablespoons Golden Syrup
  2. 4 tablespoons sugar
  3. 1 Heaped teaspoon of baking soda
  4. Pot
  5. Tablespoon and teaspoon
  6. Bunsen burner
  7. Grease proof paper
Method:
  1. Put 4 tablespoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of golden syrup in a saucepan and melt.
  2. Bring to the boil and simmer gently for 5 minutes
  3. Add baking soda and stir vigorously.
  4. Put the hokey pokey on a piece of grease prove paper to to cool.
The more the sugar syrup is cooked the browner it becomes. If it is left cooking for to long your hokey pokey becomes burnt.

Explanation:
  1. Why do we stir it?
  2. Explain why  the hokey pokey rises and has bubbles?
  3. What gas is made by the baking soda and sugar?

Business and Enterprise.

Hello Everyone Today i'm sharing a blog post about Business and Enterprise.

On Wednesday 1st of December we had business and enterprise (B&E). Me and 3 of my mates, choose to try to sell seeds on a tape (Seed Tape). I was the CEO so that means that I was in meeting and would help my team do there jobs.

We had $20 to spend but we only spend around $5. We had to send a letter to the big boss and ask to get $5 and we had to try to make at least $6 to make profit. But we originally wanted to do posters in picture frames of famous celebrity. But then we made a decision to do seed tape. Because are product was small it we only used one 1 period to make it.

Here is a picture of the seed tape:

Like I said before we choose to do seed tape but looking back our business would of been more successful if we did posters. But in regards to if we made a profit. No we didn't because our business was intended to be brought buy the adult that wore surpost to be there but wasn't because the school shut it down early. Also we didn't keep the value so we put it down to 2 for 50 cents.

But by the end if the day it was kind of fun and it was a long day but I got though it.

Thanks for looking and reading my post if you have time please leave a comment. Thanks Tom

Fingerprinting.

Hello everyone welcome to or back to my blog.

Today i'm going to share about what we are doing in science. By the title you already know but for some reason if you don't, It's fingerprinting.

These are the three things you'll need to do this.

Ink pad, Paper and if you have it a microscope.

This is the method:

1. Get a peace of paper and fold it up four times.

2. Get out your ink pad.

3. Put your finger on the ink pad and then on the paper.

4. Then last look though (your microscope) or at your fingerprints and see what fingerprint you have.

Loops: Loops are the most common type of fingerprint. 65% of the population has this type of fingerprint.

Whorls: Whorls are the second most common type of fingerprint. 30% of the population has whorls.

Arches: Arches are the least common type of fingerprint. Only 5% of the population has Arches.

My fingerprint is a whorl here are some pictures of it.

Taking Care of Yourself

Hello today i'm sharing and posting about what we have done in health this week.

Did you know that your heart is a muscle and if you be more active your heart will get bigger and stronger, aim for 150 minutes of fitness each week. This activity could be walking, biking or working out.

Two things i'm doing at the moment is playing 3v3 basketball and also I use a app called fitness coach. Fitness coach is on ios and android. If you are not into sports you can go for walks around your block or if you are into it. You can go to a gym and your area and try new things.

Thank you for reading my blog. If you have time please leave a comment. Thanks Tom

pH Indicators

Hello today I and my class are learning about pH indicators.

Definition: pH (potential of hydrogen) is a scale of acidity from 0 to 14 with 7
being neutral.
All solutions have a pH. Acid solutions, have lower pH. Alkaline solutions,
have higher pH.
Substances that aren't acidic or alkaline (that is, neutral solutions) usually have a pH of 7. Acids
have a pH that is less than 7. Alkaline have a pH that is greater than 7.

Write down the 15 substances from the diagram and beside them list their pH level.

List them under 2 headings. 1. Acidic 2. Alkaline

Experiment: Red Cabbage indicator.
Equipment:
Red Cabbage
Knife
Bunsen Burner
Beaker
Water

Method:

Cut the cabbage into small pieces.
Place the cabbage in the beaker and fill it with 50 ml of water.
Once the cabbage has boiled for 2 minutes turn it off and leave it to cool down.
Name another pH indicator used in a science lab?

Here are 4 Acids. Battery Acid, Stomach Acid, Lemon and Vinegar.
Here are 4 Alkaline's. Drain Cleaner, Bleach, Soap and Baking Soda.
By using red cabbage as an indicator we can determine what the pH level is of substances.

Persuasive Writing

Hello today i'm going to be sharing my work in Persuasive Writing.

Here is my work:

Animals Shouldn't be kept in a zoo. (title)

I strongly believe that animals should be kept in a zoo. Presently zoos take care of lot's of animals, help endangered secedes and assist animals in their births.

Firstly, in New Zealand zoos like Orana Park have lots of native animals like the kiwi, tui and eels. These animals live in encloses for the safety and comfort of the animals.

Additionally Auckland zoo have crocodiles, spiders and dinosaur bones that have been preserved for many years and will be there for many years to come. So that younger generations can see what we see today.

Finally zoos take care of the animals, clean them and feed them!

In conclusion I think animals should be kept in a zoo.

Making Ginger Beer!

Hello welcome to or back to my blog, Today i'm doing work about Ginger Beer.

Researching Yeast Types.

The History of Ginger Beer making: Ginger beer – the delicious, brewed, fermented beverage that we all know and love – first appeared around the mid-1700s in England. It was initially made as a fermented alcoholic beverage using ginger, sugar and water.

Bakers Yeast:

Nutritional Yeast:

Brewers Yeast:

Research 3 Ginger Beer Recipes.

Equipment:

Bug
Warm water
2 tsp active dried yeast
2 tsp Chelsea Raw Sugar
2 tsp ground ginger

Ginger beer
3 cups Chelsea Raw Sugar
2 tsp cream of tartar
1L boiling water and
5L cold water
Juice of 2 lemons, strained

Ingredients:

    Bug
    Warm water
    2 tsp active dried yeast
    2 tsp Chelsea Raw Sugar
    2 tsp ground ginger

    Ginger beer
    3 cups Chelsea Raw Sugar
    2 tsp cream of tartar
    1L boiling water and
    5L cold water
    Juice of 2 lemons, strained

Process:

    Bug:
Fill a large glass jar ¾ full with warm water. Add the yeast, Chelsea Raw Sugar and ginger. Cover loosely with a lid or tea-towel – do not screw tight or it won’t be able to breathe. Sit in a warm place, such as the kitchen table or similar.
Feed your bug every day for seven days with 1 tsp Chelsea Raw Sugar and 1 tsp ground ginger.
After a week, you are ready to make your first batch of beer.

    Ginger Beer:
In a large bowl or bucket, put the Chelsea Raw Sugar and cream of tartar, then add the boiling water. Stir to dissolve the sugar before adding the cold water. Get your bug and pour all the liquid (not the sludge in the bottom) into a bucket and add the lemon juice.

Stir well and then pour into your clean bottles – it makes six 750ml bottles.

Store in a cool, dark place for two weeks before drinking. Make sure you open the bottle in the kitchen sink as it might overflow. Open the cap bit by bit to allow the air to escape.

    RESTORE AND REUSE
Take the jar with the sludge in it and fill with water to the top. Tip out half or give to a friend so that they can make their own bug. Fill back up to ¾ and feed for another week.

    DON’T NEGLECT IT
If you are too busy to make a batch of ginger beer one week, don’t just keep feeding and hope for the best, as your bug won’t survive. Pour it out after a week – as you would if you were making some ginger beer – and follow the above instructions for restoring your bug all over again.

Thanks for reading and thanks to chelseas for the recipes: https://www.chelsea.co.nz/browse-recipes/ginger-beer/. Have a great day thanks thomas.

My Favorite Actor (Matt Smith)

Today's post is about my favorite actor. This is in drama with Mrs Clark.

He had a brief film appearance in 2008’s In Bruges, and had also appeared in lesser known films Falling and Gotham, ILPerhaps his highest profile television work to date was in the BBC Two programme Party Animals, where he appeared in the role of a parliamentary researcher. That was back in 2007.Smith had to go through an audition process to get the role. New BBC Wales Head of Drama Piers Wenger said that he knew they’d got their man when he saw Smith’s audition. It all sounds a bit PR-y to us, but that’s their line. Smith won’t actually be seen as Doctor Who until 2010. David Tennant will be finishing his specials off first, and then Smith will be in the role from season five in Spring of 2010. He has had no appearance or link with the show before. Here is what I did:

Rainbow Paper

Hello everyone welcome to or back to my blog today we are learning about chromatography. Today our aim is to separate the colours by using the process of chromatography.

These are the materials we are using today.

1. Boiling Tube.

2. Pen Marker.

3. Water.

4. Filter Paper.

5. Scissors.

6. Test Tube Stand.

7. Ruler.

8. Pencil

This is our process

1. Cut up the filtered paper into strips ready to write on with the felt pens.

2. Rule a line 1cm from the bottom of the paper strip.

3. Put 8ml of water into the bottom of the boiling tube.

4. Draw two coloured pen dots on the pencil line.

5. Drop the paper strip into the boiling tube and once it is touching the water at the bottom you can crease the top of the paper over.

The victim, I was a victim on the bus, at school and online. On the bus they called me a dumb and gay. I got mad and had a fight with them. The bus driver blamed me for the fight all the brown headed people on the bus attack me too. Then online at my house I saw messages of them calling me dumb. Then at school I told the teacher. I went back to school in Auckland, NZ and the school kids were saying and doing the same thing like at my old school and so I moved schools. Okay thanks for listening that has my Verson of being the victim. Okay now here's my picture:

Chromatography - Skittles

Hello welcome to or back to my blog, Today i'm doing a post about Chromatography, Chromatography is a technique for the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension through a medium in which the components move at different rates.

Our aim is to separate the colours from the skittles by using chromatography. The materials we are using today are 6 skittles, Water, Petri Dish and a beaker. The process we are using today is going be using 5 steps step one is get our equipment set up ready to pour the 50 mls of water into the petri dish with the skittles, step 2 place the skittles into the petri dish around the edges, step 3 pour 50mls water gently into the middle of the petri dish, Step 4 is going the to watch as the water removes the dye from the skittles. See which colour reaches the middle fastest. Here is a image of what happened:

Thanks for looking at my post if you have time please leave a comment. Thanks, Tom

Osmosis - Gummy Bears

Hello today's post is about osmosis the movement of solvent through the wall of a solid.

Our aim is to find out what happens to gummy bears when we put them into different liquids. My Prediction is the water will make it bigger. This is the definition of osmosis: Ibiologyosmosis is the movement of water molecules from a solution with a high concentration of water molecules to a solution with a lower concentration of water molecules, through a cell's partially permeable membrane.

Equipment:

1. Three solutions - Water, Sugar and salt.

2. Four gummy bears of the same colour.

3. Two Petri Dishes.

4. Marker Pen.

5. Electronic Balance.

6. Measuring Cylinder.

7. Beaker.

Theses are our steps.

1. Get your equipment.

2. Label Petri dishes with Dry, Water, Salt Water, Sugar Water.

3. Weigh the Gummy Bears and record their weight of the Petri dish.

4. Add 40ml of the solution into the Petri Dish

EDIT:

Findings

The water that was included in the first gummy bear dish made the gummy bear change from a dry weight of 2.46 to a wet weight of 5.94. The difference between the two weights was 3.48. This means that the gummy bear absorbed 3.48 grams of water though the process of osmosis. Te salt water gummy bear dish has a change from a dry weight of 2.48 and a wet weight of 3.90 that mean the different's was 1.92 grams. Lastly we did one last one with sugar water. When the bear was dry it was 2.45 gram and when it was wet it was 6.01 the difference was 3.56.

The one that changed the most was the sugar water so if you have them you can do it at home its fun but you have to wait 24 hours after you put it in.
